This beach town on the Yucatan mainland is a dropping-off point for excursions to the Tulum ruins by the sea and the coral lagoon of Xel-ha. A day in Playa del Carmen is best spent on the beach or visiting the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a site of tropical forests and marine habitats protecting endangered mammal, bird and reptile species.
